Funeral services for Gus Koester, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Pastor George Eschenbacher will be in charge of services. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Mr. Koester died Wednesday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. at his home in Manning following a stroke Sunday morning.

He was born February 6, 1871, at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Marie Kohl and Jurgen Koester, The family came to the United States when Mr. Koester was 11 years old, settling in the Manning area. He farmed all his life until his retirement March 1, 1948, when he moved to town.

He was married December 1, 1897, to Mary Carstensen, who died October 15, 1946. Surviving are seven children: Louis, Albert Lea, Minnesota; Mrs. Ida Wunder, Manning, with whom he made his home; Mrs. Louie Meyer (Hilda), St. Cloud, Minnesota; Julius, New Castle, Wyoming; Henry, Cherokee; Mrs. Herman Lamp (Amanda), Manning; and Harry, Manning. The family includes nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Herman; six brothers and one sister. He was the last of his family. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
