H.H. Derner Rites Held Here

Friends and relatives of Manning and vicinity were greatly saddened when the report was received the Mr. Hans H. Derner of Rock Island, Illinois had passed on to his reward. A resident of this vicinity for many years during which time he gained a host of friends by whom he was highly respected and known to be one of the most accommodating neighbors and friends for anyone to posses. To his family he was a good provider and a loving husband and father.

Hans H. Derner was born in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on the 18th day of October 1866. He was an only child, and early in life he was adopted by his uncle and aunt in Kiel. As a boy he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

When he was 15 years of age, in the company of friends of his family, he came to the United States and landed in Westside, Iowa. There he worked on a farm and acquitted himself well. He was regarded as a first class young man, industrious, thrifty and friendly.

In the year 1886, he was married to Augusta Stein and the marriage took place at the county seat of Carroll. Immediately after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Derner settled in Arcadia and were farmers.

To this union were born 10 children, two have passed away; one child in infancy and the other a daughter Selma, died in 1925.

Mr. Derner is survived by his wife and eight children whose names are Lily (Mrs. George Boock) of Long Grove, Iowa; Laura, at home; Herman, at home; Louise of Hermosa, California; John who farms five miles west of Manning; Malinda (Mrs. Willette) of Detroit, Michigan; Jeanette (Mrs. Sam Pacholke) Argusville, North Dakota; Hazel (Mrs. Ralph Mooney) of Rock Island, Ilinois.

There are nine grandchildren and one great grandchild left to mourn him.

Thirteen years ago, in 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Derner moved from their farm situated in the south west of Manning and went to live in Illinois. He enjoyed good health up to two years ago when he became to fail and on Thursday, last December the 16th, he passed peacefully away. He was 68 years, 1 month and 20 days when he died.

Mr. Derner was a very likable man and wherever he went he made friends. He was held in the highest possible esteem and his character was recognized as one of abiding worth. He was a member of the Woodmen of America fraternity. At his wish he was buried in the lot where his two children lie in the Manning Cemetery. He will be fondly remembered by his sorrowing wife and children and by a host of friends.

The funeral services were held Monday, December 17th from the Ohde Funeral Home, the Reverend E.J. Hough, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Manning officiating. Interment was made in the Manning Cemetery. As pallbearers acted R.G. Sutherland, A.J. Reinhold, John Frahm, George Carsten, Alfred Kuhl and Jul Wehrmann.


Hans Derner is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
