Last Rites Held for
Hans Joens Monday

Friends were deeply grieved when the message came Friday afternoon, September 20, 1935, that Hans Joens had passed away at his home on East Street after a brief illness, death being due to infirmities of old age.

Hans Joens was born September 18, 1858, in Benbig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Spending his boyhood days in his native country he came to the United States in 1872 and settled first in Clinton county, Iowa. Residing in Clinton county until 1883, he came westward like so many of the pioneers to look for better opportunities out west. He came to Crawford county, working at farming and where he met his future helpmate Miss Maria Hansen to whom he was united in wedlock in the same year. Residing on different farms in Crawford county, they decided to move to Colony, Kansas, in 1906 which was a new settlement at that time. Residing there until in February 1929, when they retired from active farm life and came to Manning to spend their eve of life near their children.

Mr. and Mrs. Joens were the parents of eight children of which two passed away in early childhood. Those who are left to mourn the death of the father besides the bereaved widow and mother, are four sons and two daughters, Henry Joens of Denison, Ia.; Albert Joens of Manning; John Joens of Halbur; Mrs. Linda Denton of Carnett, Kansas; Walter Joens of West Side and Mrs. Ashley Smith of Akron, Colorado; also 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, September 23, from the Lutheran church, the Reverend J. M. Ansorge conducting the services. Interment was made at the Hays township cemetery.

The deceased was one of the early settlers of this community. By hard labor in his younger days he reared and supported a splendid family; and because of his honesty and squareness he held the respect of the people of the entire community. His suffering was not intense but he seemed to be ailing occasionally for the past year, which was an indication of his declining age to his family. He was confined to his bed for about two weeks and his passing came as a shock to his family and friends. We extend sincere sympathy to those who deeply mourn the loss.
