In Memory of Harley Feldick

Harley Glen Feldick, age 90, of Coralville, Iowa, died on November 26, 2010, at Windmill Manor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the River Community Church Missions fund or Iowa City Hospice. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

Harley was born October 29, 1920, to Theodore "Ted" and Lulu (Folkerts) Feldick at Buffalo Center, Iowa. He attended Buffalo Center Grade School and High School. He graduated in May, 1938. The following September of 1938, he enrolled at the University of Iowa, then known as the State University of Iowa (SUI). Harley graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 1942 with a pre-med curriculum. He then attended the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine from June 1942 to graduation in June 1945.

While in school, Harley married Norma Dietz of Manning, Iowa on August 11, 1944. From July 1945 to June 1946, he had an internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota.

On July 1, 1946, Harley was inducted into the United States Army as First Lieutenant and then placed on “Detached Duty” with the Veteran Administration Hospitals. He spent nine months with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa and fifteen months with the Veterans Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, with a promotion to Captain.

Harley was honorably discharged from the service in June of 1948. He then had a surgical fellowship in the Golden Memorial Hospital in Elkins, West Virginia but would eventually return to Buffalo Center, Iowa with a couple of fellow physicians and developed a hospital and clinic. He remained in this position until September 1971 when he joined the staff of the University of Iowa Student Health Service and was appointed as the “Team Physician” for intercollegiate athletics.

In 1975, Harley was appointed as Director of the Student Health Service and Team Physician Coordinator for Men’s and Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics. These obligations continued until his retirement from the University in December, 1985.

Following retirement, Harley and Norma moved to Rogers, Arkansas in January of 1986 where they resided on Beaver Lake. They returned to Coralville in September, 1993.

Dr. Feldick was assured of eternal life by believing the Gospel (Romans 1:16 & Romans 15:1-4). He had been a bible teacher in each of the churches that he was a member. At the time of his death, he was a member of the River Community Church.

Those left to honor Harley’s memory are his wife Norma; daughters Dr. Barbara Risius of Lyndhurst, Ohio and Virginia (Carl) Hampton of Angier, North Carolina; son Mark (Patricia) Feldick of Coralville, Iowa; grandsons Erik (Erica) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Andrew (Larissa) of Merced, California, and Jonathan of Phoenix, Arizona; brother Leslie (Iris) of Kinta, Oklahoma; sister Janice (Donald) O’Connor of New Prague, Minnesota; four nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
