Harlyn Lewis Hinz

Harlyn Lewis Hinz, son of Adolph and Alma Hinz, was born on January 13, 1917, in Manning, Iowa. After the death of his mother when Harlyn was 12 years old, Adolph married Antonia Feldmann.

Harlyn graduated from high school in Manning. He received a degree in dairy science at Iowa State University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He went on to be employed by the Carnation Milk Company, Arden Farms and Knudsen Dairy Products. He retired in 1982 after 42 years in the dairy business.

Harlyn Married Eleanor Downer in 1940. They adopted one son, Thomas. Eleanor passed away in 1950. On August 15, 1953, Harlyn married Ernestine Burroughs, and they had three children, Gregory, Robin, and David. For many years Harlyn enjoyed playing weekly games of golf. He remained active, and physical fitness was always a part of his daily routine. Family events were most important to him.

On Monday, December 22, 2003, at Mad River Hospital, in Arcata, California, with family members at his side, Harlyn died peacefully of pneumonia. The last ten months of his life were especially challenging after the loss of his eyesight early in 2003. He was a resident of Arcata, California, since 1995.

Harlyn was preceded in death by his mother, Alma; his father, Adolph "Ott" Hinz; his stepmother, Antonia Hinz; and his son Gregory Hinz. Deceased cousins from Denison, Marilyn and Roy Whited.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Ernestine Hinz; his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kathy Hinz; his daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Leonard Garner; his son, David Hinz; and five grandsons: Nicholas, Keenan, and Aaron Hinz, and Clay and Cole Garner. Cousins in the local area: Bud and Thelma Mohr, Manning, Wayne and Lila Schroeder, Manning, Marjorie and John Whited, Denison, Iva and Orville Hinze, Carroll.

A memorial Celebration of Life was held in the home of the deceased on Sunday, December 28, 2003 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Plaza "Tree of Light Fund".
