Harold L. Asmus

Harold L. Asmus, 83, of Audubon, Iowa, died July 8, 2005, at the Friendship Home in Audubon. Funeral services were Monday, July 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Audubon. Interment was in the Manning, Iowa, Cemetery.

Harold L. Asmus was born September 27, 1921, to Henry and Wilhemenia (Dreager) Asmus. He lived his entire life on the farm where he was born. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He graduated from Gray High School in 1938.

On May 20, 1945, he married Darlene Meyer at Christ Lutheran Church in Churdan, Iowa.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Audubon. He held elected offices at the church from the time that he was 18 years old. He served at Walther League president, Sunday School superintendent, chairman of the congregation, member of the finance board, elder, and treasurer. He was active on other boards and committees including Camp Okoboji, Lutheran Church Extension Fund, Lutheran Layman’s League, and the Fellowship Club. He also served as the Lincoln Township clerk for more than 40 years.

Mr. Asmus loved working with his Hereford cattle, and sold them into 20 states. He was active in the leadership of the Hereford Association, and was secretary and director for the Farm Bureau. In 2000, he was inducted into the Hereford Breeders’ Hall of Fame.

For 51 years, he exhibited vegetables, fruit and grain at the Iowa State Fair, and was a loyal supporter of the Audubon County Fair. He was one of the founders of the Audubon Farmer’s Market.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Audubon; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Stan Baack of Audubon, and Mary and Bruce Barkley of Blair; three granddaughters; sister, Viola Ostebee of Audubon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl and Arnold Asmus.

Memorials are suggested to the family for the relocation and preservation of Trinity Lutheran Church.
