Harold Herman, son of Lars and Marie (Frees) Hodne, was born January 5, 1910, in rural Audubon County, Iowa. He moved with his family to a farm near Irwin where he attended school and graduated from Irwin High School. Following his graduation he worked on the family farm with his father and brother Arlo.

Lucille Vivian Marie, daughter of Otto Herman and Wilhelmina Marie Emma (Passick) Hagedorn, was born April 8, 1914, in rural Audubon County, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home.

Both Harold and Lucille were baptized into the Lutheran faith.

On December 6, 1933, Lucille and Harold were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin by Reverend Itse. They lived on a farm near Gray until 1939 when they moved back to the home place east of Irwin. Lucille was a homemaker and also did a lot of farm work. Harold was a seed salesman during the time they lived on the farm. When they quit farming in 1954 they moved to Harlan for a short time and then to Manning where he worked for the elevator. In 1968, they moved to Perry where Harold worked part-time jobs and bought houses then remodeled and sold them. Harold and Lucille were committed to one another as evidenced by nearly 69 years of marriage.

When her eyesight allowed, Lucille enjoyed sewing and crocheting in her spare time. She also loved cooking and baking and did both until shortly before her death. Harold enjoyed visiting with family and friends and considered no one a stranger to him. In their retirement years, they would go out for breakfast every morning.

Harold and Lucille died as a result of an automobile accident east of Perry on the morning of Thursday, April 25, 2002, after their breakfast outing. Harold died at the scene of the accident and Lucille died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Harold was 92 years, 3 months and 20 days of age and Lucille was 88 years and 17 days of age.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents and brother Arlo Hodne. Lucille is preceded in death by her parents, brother Ray Hagedorn and sister Leona Beerman.

Harold and Lucille are survived by their two sons Larry Hodne of Ralston and Randy Hodne of Perry; three grandchildren: Denton Hodne of Austin, Texas, Shawn and husband Steven Moes of Ralston and Melissa and husband Jim Van Dorn of Perry: five great-grandchildren: Ashleigh Hodne; Shane.
