Harry John Backhaus was born January 15, 1910, the son of William and Emilie (Schumann) Backhaus. He died Monday, February 4, 2002, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-two.

Harry was born on a farm in Ida County and was baptized in Christ on April 3, 1910, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and later confirmed on April 5, 1925, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education Harry farmed with his father.

On February 7, 1932, Harry was united in marriage to Milda Schillerberg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. The couple settled on a farm in Ida County, until 1942 when they purchased a farm south of Westside. Along with farming, which was more than an occupation to him, Harry sold Crows Seed Corn for over twenty-five years. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved to Denison in the spring of 1980. Harry moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in August of 1997.

Harry was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Voter's Assembly. He was a member of the Schuetzen Verein of Westside and also served as director of Hayes Township School No. 5. Harry enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the phone calls received from his children. He also enjoyed trains, socializing in a game of Mouser, and going for rides with his very good friend, Herman Garbe. In his leisure time, Harry enjoyed attending dances with his wife and loved to listen to Polka music.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Milda in 1994; one daughter in infancy; one grandson, Todd Yockey; and two sisters, Ella Hamann and Bernice Bruhn.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Donnelson and her husband, Lyle of Glenwood, Iowa; one son, Dennis Backhaus and his wife, Margaret of Westside; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Darlyne Schillerberg of Denison and one brother-in- law, Merle Schillerberg of Charter Oak; other relatives and friends.
