Drown In Minnesota Flood Waters

Relatives here received word of the death of their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Goettsch and son Roland 12, of Montevideo, Minnesota, in the floodwaters of the Minnesota River, Sunday, April 4th, 1943.

They had been staying with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and, Mrs. Frank Krueger in town, but had started by boat to the farm a mile away, to care for the stock. It is believed Mrs. Goettsch suffered a heart attack, causing the boat to upset, since her body floated to shore. Roland's body was recovered later in the day but searchers hunted 20 hours before the body of Mr. Goettsch was found at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Montevideo. Those who attended from here included Mr. and Mrs. Julius Dammann, Mrs. Eddie Dammann, Mr. William Goettsch, and Mr. and Mrs. Milford Van Buren.

Harry August Goettsch, 38, was born on a farm north of Manning and grew to manhood there. He was employed at various places in that vicinity and in Lincoln Township, before going to Manilla where he was employed before moving to Groton, South Dakota, where he was married, to Marvel Natzel who had formerly lived at Manilla until moving with her parents to Groton. They lived there 3 years when they moved to Montevideo where they had lived the past 13 years.

Four children survive and are being cared for by her sister, including Berdetta, 13; Billy 11; Dennis 4, and Glennis Rae 2.

Mrs. Goettsch is survived by her father and stepmother and 9 brothers and sisters, 6 of whom were cared for by her several years following the death of her mother in an accident in 1929. She was 37 at the time of her death.

Harry who was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. William Goettsch is survived by 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Ella (Mrs. Julius Dammann) of Manning; Alviena (Mrs. Eddie Dammann) of Lincoln Township; William Goettsch who is employed near Ross; Louie who is employed on a farm near Montevideo; Mrs. Milford Van Buren (Betty) of Carrollton, and Emil in the service overseas.

A club to which Mrs. Goettsch had belonged served luncheon for all out of town relatives and friends. The R.E.A. furnished power for the searchlights for the searchers who worked until midnight Sunday.


Manning Group At Funeral of Former Residents
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Dammann, Mrs. Eddie Dammann, Mr. William Goettsch, and Mr. and Mrs. Milford Van Buren returned this week from Montevideo, Minnesota, where they had attended funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Harry Goettsch, and son Roland, 12, who had drowned in the flood waters of the Minnesota River, April 4th. They had started to their home a mile away from the town to care for the livestock. It is believed that Mrs. Goettsch suffered a heart attack causing their boat to overturn as her body floated to shore. Roland was found later in the afternoon, and Mr. Goettsch about 8 o'clock in the afternoon of the following day.

Harry Goettsch, 38, was born and raised on a farm north of Manning, Mrs. Goettsch, who formerly lived at Manilla, was 37 years old. Four children survive: Berdetta, 13; Billy, 11; Dennis, 4; and Glennis Rae, 2.

Mrs. Goettsch is survived by her father and step-mother and nine brothers and sisters.

Mr. Goettsch was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Goettsch.

Surviving are three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Julius Dammann (Ella), Manning; Mrs. Eddie Dammann (Alviena), Lincoln Township; William Goettsch, Ross; Louis, Montevideo; Mrs. Milford Van Buren (Betty), Carrollton; and Emil, who is in the service overseas.
