Hazel Adel Holdsworth was born in Manning Hospital to John and Evelyn (Drake) Holdsworth on February 5th, 1940. She was baptized at the Church of Christ in Irwin, Iowa, and grew up on a farm close to Westside and went to school in Westside until 5th grade. Her family then moved to a farm near Gray, Iowa, and she attended Gray Elementary for grades 6th through 11th.

An active member in 4H, Hazel competed at the Audubon County Fair, eventually taking a first place prize for the "Hog Calling" competition. Among her many talents, she played piano, drums in the school band and was also good with the Baton at Audubon High School. Hazel was in the chorus all during her high school years, and occasionally sang solos in the concerts. She was also active in athletics, playing guard for the Audubon Women's Basketball team.

After graduating from high school in 1958, she attended college and received a degree in Key Punching, and immediately went to work for EMC Insurance Company in Des Moines. She continued her passion for singing, participating in the Drake University production of the Messiah. Hazel was also passionate about country music, singing in a traveling country band on the side. She loved adventure, having traveled the better part of the entire United States during her life - an achievement she was very proud of. She was also a proud charter member of the Church of Christ in Carroll.

Hazel lived a life in full as a result of the love she gave to those around her. She retired from Crouse Cartage Company after 38 years. But she didn't really retire. Hazel would go on to take jobs with several different businesses, including gas stations, and occasionally offered advice and guidance to those in need. On the face of it, Hazel had a work ethic unmatched, but in fact, it was her love of people that was her motivation to work. She loved visiting and talking with family, friends and customers. Often she would open her home to those in need of a place to stay.

Hazel was a dedicated mother to her children Frank and Robin. She loved spending time with her grandchildren Faith, Rees and Delani, forming a special bond with them. She also loved the time spent with her sisters. Infectious laughing would soon take over the casual conversation. And she considered her nieces and nephews her own kids. And if her quality of cooking was any indication of how strongly she felt about her family (her pancakes were the best), then we can all sleep easy knowing she left this stage of her journey with a full heart. She inspired all of us to be kind, work hard and do better. Her loving impact on those who crossed paths with her will live on.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents.
