Hazel, daughter of Jacob Lage Jr. and Emma (Witt) Lage, was born June 19, 1914, in Arcadia, Iowa. As a young girl she moved with her family to a small farm near Manning. She attended Manning schools, graduating with the Class of 1933. Following her schooling she worked in several stores in Manning, including the Dime Store and Mayflower Cafe.

On January 23, 1940, Hazel was united in marriage with Freddie Ehlers at Harlan. Two sons were born to this union. In 1952, Hazel was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning.

The family farmed near Botna and Manning and then near Aspinwall for 25 years. Freddie died unexpectedly in 1975 and later that year Hazel moved into Manning.

Hazel was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, VFW Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens Center. In her spare time she enjoyed going to dances with Freddie, playing cards, traveling and volunteering. She also embroidered and did crossword puzzles. Above all Hazel loved and enjoyed her three granddaughters.

Hazel became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in March of 2003. She died there on September 4, 2007, at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 16 days.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, parents, granddaughter Amy Jo Ehlers, twin brothers in infancy, brother Glen Lage, and sister Ina Roosa.

She is survived by her two sons Dale Ehlers and wife Marcy of Manning and Rod Ehlers of Westside; three granddaughters: Alycia and husband Kevin Sporrer of Wall Lake; Afton Ehlers of Dension; and Holly and husband Jose Jimenez of Ankeny; two great-grandchildren Carlos Jimenez and Landon Sporrer; two step-great-grandchildren Tommy Jimenez and Christian Jimenez; sister Ruth Schroeder of Denison; sister-in-law Maxine Lage of Fort Dodge; other relatives and friends
