H.H. Kuhl Died This Morning

H.H. Kuhl Dies After Long Illness
While not unexpected, yet with sincere regret for the loss of one of our loyal friends, we must this week record the passing of Henry H. Kuhl, which occurred in the early morning of Thursday, December 30, 1937. In his death the community loses one of its best citizens, loyal and honest to the core, a good provider, a faithful husband, and an indulgent and loving father.

Although he retired from active farming and moved to Manning, it was not his intention to remain idle, and he started building residences which were considered among the most modern at the time of their erection. He built the home now occupied by Mrs. C.H. Stuhr; the house east of it, belonging to J.J. Reimers and now occupied by Harry Rix and family; the home owned by the late Martin Petersen on May street; and the one in which he was living on Sue street where he passed away. Even at the time of his recent illness which resulted in his death, he was contemplating the erection of a modern home on the corner of Fourth and Elm Streets.

The deceased lived a successful, fruitful life, a life replete with noble purposes. He fulfilled the true purpose of life, and so we say his life was an undisputed success. Proud indeed may be the family to have shared equally in the performance of this true purpose. He was a man of sterling character, a cheerful disposition and readily attracted to those desiring his acquaintance and ultimate friendship.

He has gone to his reward.

Heinrich H. Kuhl was born January 29, 1854, at Suderau bei Krempe, Holstein, Germany, the son of Peter and Augusta Kuhl. He was educated and confirmed in Germany.

He came to America with his cousin Henry Bremer, to Davenport when he was seventeen years old. For a while he worked on a farm in Scott County. In the fall of 1872, he went to live with his brother Joachim in Benton County, and later he lived with his brother Marcus and family in Crawford County.

He was united in marriage to Caroline Kuhl in the spring of 1880, and the couple lived on their own farm in Crawford County on the 90 acres later occupied by the Joachim Lamp family after which it was added to the present Harry Wunder farm. In 1882, he purchased the 180 acre farm on which they live until their retirement in 1907, when they moved to Manning.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on March 5, 1930, amidst a circle of friends and relatives, and in the best of health.

Until the past two years, Mr. Kuhl had always been in good health. He had been bedfast only eight days before death came in the early morning of December 30, 1937, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 1 day.

Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his passing, his three children, Rudolph of Manning, Hugo at home, and Laura, Mrs. George Campbell of Audubon; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a brother John and a sister, Mrs. Cecilia Wortmann, both living in Germany. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held from the Ohde Funeral home on Sunday afternoon with Rev. George E. Steele in charge. Interment was made in the Manning Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Herman Ehlers, Roy Kuhl, Wayne Dudgeon, Ryle Dudgeon, Marcus Kuhl, and Wilbur Anthony.
