Helen L. Donaghu

Funeral Services for Helen Louise Donaghu were held Thursday, August 21, 1997, at 10:30 a.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Marshall Brown of First Presbyterian Church, Manning, Iowa, officiated the service with Helen Ohde as vocalist and Janet Myer as organist. Interment was held in Manning Cemetery with Roger Hinz, Duane Monson, Tim Jansen, Duane Boersma, Tamara Merriman, and Teresa Benning as casketbearers.

Helen, daughter of Peter F. and Ollie Myrtle (Hilsabeck) Hamann, was born May 12, 1910, on a farm near Coon Rapids in Audubon County, Iowa. She attended school at Viola Center and graduated from Manning High School.

On September 24, 1934, Helen was united in marriage to Fay G. Donaghu at Morning Sun, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. They lived in Manning until 1956, then moved to West Liberty. Helen worked in Iowa City for 16 years at Oral B. Laboratory. While living in West Liberty she belonged to the Women's Club Presbyterian Church, Ruth Circle and taught Sunday school.

Upon retiring in 1972, Helen and Fay moved back to Manning where she was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Trustee, Ruth Circle, and Garden Club. Helen also was a member of the City Park Board and was an active volunteer at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home and Senior Center. Helen loved flower gardening and keeping active.

Helen cared for her invalid husband for many years before his death on July 15, 1984.

Due to failing health, Helen became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in November of 1995. She died there on Monday, August 18, 1997, at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 6 days.

Besides her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gordon Anthony; three sisters: Clara Fiscus, Mable Kisgen and Mildred Holton; and one brother, Raymond Hamann.

Survivors include her daughter, Deanna Anthony, of Park Forest, Illinois; her son, William Donaghu and his wife, Roberta, of Portland, Oregon; four grandchildren: Scott Anthony of Glenview, Illinois; Ryan Anthony of Park Forest, Illinois; Michael Donaghu and his wife, Laurie, of Portland, Oregon; and Melissa Donaghu of Madras, Oregon; one great-grandchild, Piper Donaghu, of Portland, Oregon; two sisters: Bernice Schumacher, of Omaha, Nebraska and Claris and her husband, Alvin Jansen, of Manning; one brother, Clayton Hamann of Grand Junction, Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
