Helen Margaret, daughter of Matthew and Catherine (Halloran) Ryan, was born July 3, 1908, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She was baptized on July 25, 1908, at Holy Name Church in Rock Rapids. As a child Helen moved with her family to Luverne, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school. Helen then attended nurse’s training at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, completing the program in three years. She continued to live in Carroll and worked in private duty as a registered nurse.

On June 14, 1938, Helen was united in marriage with John Edward Horn at St. Joseph’s Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Manning and Helen began working for the Manning Hospital. Throughout the years she also worked for the Manning Plaza Nursing Home and for the Even Tide Nursing Home in Denison. Helen spent many years as a homemaker as well. She continued to live in Manning after John’s death on September 7, 1976.

Helen was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning and a past member of Sacred Heart Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was also a member of the Little Flower Study Club. She was a devout Catholic and prayed for many people. Helen loved to read and when she and John took their annual fishing trip to Minnesota Helen sat in the boat and read a book while John fished. After John died Helen still enjoyed traveling and went on many bus tours.

Helen entered St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa on September 24, 1999, and died there Saturday, February 10, 2001, at the age of 92 years, 7 months and 7 days.

Preceding Helen in death, besides her parents and husband, were two brothers Frank and Patrick Ryan; four sisters: Mary Strassberg, Josephine Ryan, Betty Hagemann and Frances Sammon; and several nieces and nephews: Jan Steiner, Beatrice Burns, Mary Sammon, Mary C. Kennedy and Gerald Kennedy.
