Manning Monitor February 11, 1893
Henry Grube Dead

Mr. Henry Grube, who has been ill for the past year passed away on Thursday night, February 9, 1893, at 10 o'clock. The disease was cancer of the stomach.

About five months ago Mr. Grube went to Davenport to have an operation performed. The surgeons opened him and found that the cancer could not be removed without producing death, but he was left in ignorance of the fact. It was known that he could live only a few months but he had hoped of recovery, and for a short time after the operation appeared much better. For a number of weeks he has been growing weaker and death ended his sufferings as stated above.

The deceased was born in Holstein, Germany, March 28, 1853, and would have been 43 years old had he lived until next March 28th. He came to this country in 1865 and located in Davenport where he made his home until he moved to Carroll county in 1873. Here he engaged in farming and was most successful. Mr. Grube was married to Miss Ida Kusel October 24, 1874, and she has been a most faithful wife to him ever since. He continued on the farm until 1883 when he moved to Manning and has been an honored citizen and highly respected by all since. The Monitor can say without exaggeration that no one had more friends than Henry Grube. He was a member of the Schuetzen Verein and that fraternity will have charge of the funeral tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock.

Henry Grube, 1893
Der Carroll Demokrat
February 17, 1893

Mr. Henry Grube is no longer. He was called away to the better hereafter on Thursday evening at ten o'clock. For several months now, the deceased had suffered from stomach cancer, and so had gone to Davenport to seek help there. Upon examining the diseased part of his body, it was determined that an operation would quite endanger the patient's life, and so Henry Grube had to surrender himself to fate.
After he returned from Davenport, a remarkable recovery ensued, which gave occasion for optimism. But a few weeks ago, there was a change for the worse, which made it impossible for him to leave the sick-bed. Unfortunately, the deceased suffered somewhat until death released him.
The deceased was born on March 28, 1853 in Holstein, Germany. He came to America in 1865 and settled first in Davenport, Iowa. He moved to Carroll County in 1873, where he farmed with great success, and then on October 24 he married Miss Ida Kusel, sister of Wilhelm, Herman and Christ Kusel. This marriage was quite joyous. In 1883, he left his farm and moved to Manning, where he soon won the love and respect of all his fellow citizens. Mr. Grube was one of the oldest and most-respected members of the local Schuetzen Verein, which did not neglect to pay its last respects as a group to its beloved club-member. But there were also many other mourners present from near and far to pay their final respects.
The Rev. Pastor Wilhelm Martens conducted the funeral sermon. We note that the German culture in and around Manning has suffered a painful loss, because he always attended to the interests of German-Americans wherever he could.
Our most sincere sympathies!
