God saw he was getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around him
And whispered, “Come with Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched him suffer
And saw him fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.

A golden heart stopped beating.
Hard working hands laid to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Henry John, son of Albert and Maria (Reitmeier) Handlos, was born October 1, 1917, near Templeton in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended Catholic school in Dedham and, due to his father’s failing health, had to quit school and help his brothers on the farm.

On October 10, 1939, Henry was united in marriage with Genevieve Marie Kasperbauer at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Henry and Genevieve met at a dance in Templeton. The marriage ceremony took place at 6:00 AM as Henry had to pick corn afterwards. Three children were born to this union. Henry and Genevieve farmed east of Manning and near Manilla before settling in Audubon County. In 1984 they retired and moved into Manning.

Henry was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning. His interests included polka dancing, walking, driving, vehicles and tractors. His family and working hard were important to him. He and Genevieve were inseparable and very active.

On April 20, 2001, Henry became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa, where he died April 20, 2002. He was 84 years, 6 months and 20 days of age.

Besides his parents, Henry was preceded in death by three brothers: Albert, Frank and Edward Handlos, a grandson Robert Handlos, and a brother-in-law Don Kasperbauer.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Genevieve Handlos of Manning; three children: Marilyn and husband Val Meyer of Beatrice, Nebraska; Gerald Handlos and wife Janet of Georgetown, Texas; and Marian and husband Chuck Lumpkin of Hancock; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lila Handlos, Loretta Handlos and Maxine Handlos, all of Manning; Jerome Kasperbauer and wife Margaret of Manning; Dorothy and husband Orville Kerkhoff of Audubon; Raymond Kasperbauer of Council Bluffs; Bonita and husband John Kahler of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Marie Ogorman of Greeley, Nebraska; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
