Henry Heckmann
Death of an Old Pioneer
Henry Heckmann, one of the oldest residents of Manning passed away at his home on
west Third Street, February 14, at about 9 A.M. after a few days Illness. He was not
thought to be at all dangerously ill but Grippe, and old age did their work. Mr. Heckmann
was the father of our townsman L.H. Heckmann, proprietor of the east side grocery and
had been in the employee of Henry Hoffmann & Co. at the big store as their boot and
shoe repairer for a number of years and was formerly employed by William Wehrmann
the boot and shoe man for nine years. Mr. Heckmann was one of our best citizens always
at work and seemed to be always content with his surroundings, as he expressed himself
to his son, Louis, the last days of his life. When asked if there was anything he could
do for him he replied; "No, Louis, you have always been a good dutiful son to me and there
is nothing you can do now." He was a member of the German Lutheran church and lived a
good Christian life. Henry Heckmann was born in Hessen, Cassel, Germany, July 11,
1837, and was married to Christina ?Vogt? can't read the microfilm January 15, 1864, and
came to America in 1881 and settled in Manning where they have since resided. Seven
children were born to this union, 5 of whom are dead. Louis Heckmann of Manning, and
Mrs. Frank Hoffmann of Carroll are the surviving children.
The funeral will be held at the German Lutheran church at 2 o'clock this afternoon Rev. Seeger of Manilla officiating after which the remains will be laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery south of town.
