Herbert was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. He attended rural school and the Manning Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1942. Herbert then helped operate the family farm.

On July 25, 1948, he was united in marriage to Gloria Haner at the Oak Hill Lutheran Church west of Brayton, Iowa. Four children: Patricia, Paul, Steven, and Craig were born to this union. They lived in Manning where Herbert was a mechanic at the Buick garage for a short time. They moved onto a farm which they operated for several years. Later they purchased Gloria's family farm west of Brayton. Along with farming he helped at the Brayton Produce, Bintner garage, and sold Hybrid seed corn. In 1966 they moved into Brayton but he continued to farm growing row crops and raising livestock until he retired from farming in 1995. Herbert raised cattle for several years after he finished farming. He then spent his time mowing his lawn and tending to his garden.

Herbert was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. He was a 4-H Leader for many years. He was a member of the Brayton Fire Department and a member of the Brayton Community Club. He looked forward to attending auctions to watch the different animals and people. He had a peach orchard and enjoyed harvesting the fruit.
