HERMAN H. HARGENS
Funeral services for Herman H. Hargens were held Monday, October 17, 1983, at 2 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home at Manning, Iowa with the Reverend John Cornish of Manning United Methodist Church officiating. Judy Joens was vocalist and Dorothy Kusel was organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with Ronald Hansen, Mark Hargens, Dennis Hargens, Gary Kroeger, Lonnie Hargens and Doug Hargens as casketbearers.

Herman H. Hargens, son of Peter and Anna Hargens, was born December 7, 1888, in Germany. He came to the United States and to the Manning area with his family when he was 6 months old.

He was united in marriage with Laura Jansen on February 21, 1912. They farmed in the Manning and Aspinwall area until moving to Manning in 1937. Herman worked for the Grundmeier Hatchery and Dultmeier, and later was Manning night watchman.

Herman and his wife moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 1977, and Laura died a short time after their move.

Herman continued to make his home at the Plaza, and died there Friday evening, October 14, 1983, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 7 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, by two sons, Harold and Wayne (in 1982); by a daughter, Louisa; by a grandson, Michael; by the following brothers and sisters: Pete, Chris, Bill, Henry, Annie Benninghaus, Lena Meiers, and Maggie Steckelberg.

Herman is survived by five children: Irene, Mrs. Marvin Hansen, Manning, Elaine Kroeger, Westside, Donald, Brayton, Dewey, Westside, and Merlyn, Manning; by 30 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; by his sister, Bertha Jarvis of California; as well as many other relatives and friends.
