Herman, son of Harry and Emma (Niemier) Jochimsen, was born February 16, 1898, near Buck Grove, Iowa, and was baptized into the Lutheran faith shortly after his birth. He attended rural schools near his home and worked on the farm with his dad. On April 9, 1911, Herman was confirmed at the Lutheran Church. On February 27, 1920, he was united in marriage with Rebecca Parker. Two daughters, Marion and Ruth, were born to this union. They lived in Manilla while Herman worked as a farmer. Rebecca died in November of 1927. On January 30, 1929, Herman was united in marriage with Ida Ress at Manning. Herman and his family lived on a farm near Manilla until 1963 when he retired. Herman and Ida have made their home in Manning since that time. Even though he lived in town, farming remained Herman's primary interest. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Due to failing health Herman entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning in July of 1990. He died there on Tuesday, October 22, 1991, at the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
