LAID TO REST HERE FRIDAY

Deceased Was Well Known in This Community and Leaves Scores of Friends to Mourn His Passing.

Died at Council Bluffs
Many hearts were saddened over the entire community when the sad news was spread last Wednesday that Herman D. Joens had passed away in the hospital in Council Bluffs, After a prolonged illness, he went to Council Bluffs, where he consulted specialists in regard to his physical condition. An operation was advised to which he submitted, though serious as it was, he showed signs of improving and recuperating slowly. On about February 26, last, he again became very ill and was removed to the hospital where he had taken former treatments. And everything in the power of specialists and human knowledge was done but of no avail. He quietly passed away on Tuesday, March 3rd, 1931, at the age of 46 years, 2 months and 7 days.

Herman D. Joens was born December 24, 1885, in Clinton county, Iowa, as the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Joens. In 1895 he came with his parents to Manning, assisting them in their farm work. In 1907, he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Anna Jansen to which union two daughters were born; namely, Lillian, Mrs. Andresen of Irwin, and Lucille of Manning.

In the same year of their marriage the young couple moved to Clinton, Iowa, where they remained until 1919, when they returned to Manning and located on a farm. They have been, farming here ever since, and during that time have endeared themselves in the hearts of their many friends for their neighborly, friendly and up-right ways to all who came in contact with them. The deceased was a kind father and loving husband, who will be sadly missed in the home and among his friends as a neighbor.

Those who are left to mourn his untimely death are the bereaved widow, Mrs. Anna Joens; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Andresen of Irwin, Ia., and Miss Lucille Joens of Manning. His mother, Mrs. Mathias Joens of, Manning, six brothers, Mathias of Buhl, Idaho; John and William of Manilla, Henry, Ben and Frank of Manning, and one sister, Clara, Mrs. John Anthony of West Side. His father passed away on January 17, 1929.

The funeral was held oh Friday, March 6th, 1931, at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon from the Lutheran church, the Reverend J. M. Ansorge conducting the services. Interment was made at the Manning cemetery and many were the friends who were present to pay their last respect to their departed friend. The bereaved family has the deepest sympathy of the entire community.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jurgen Schroeder, Mr. William Schroeder and Mrs. Harry Kohler of Clinton, Iowa; Mr. Henry Schroeder of Morrison, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Claus Bielfeldt of Denison, Ia., and Emil Joens of Jefferson, Iowa.


Herman Joens is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
