Hilda Karsten Funeral services for Hilda Karsten were held Friday, August 20, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Larry McAlpine of the United Methodist Church, Manning, Iowa, officiated the service with Judy Joens and Marshall Brown as vocalists and JoAnn Karsten as organist. Interment was held in Manning Cemetery with Doug Schroeder, Jim Karsten, Joe Karsten, Jason Karsten, John Lorenzen and Joshua Linde as casket bearers.

Hilda, daughter of August and Caroline (Tank) Schroeder, was born July 5, 1900, in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home. She spent many years doing housework in various homes in the area.

On October 18, 1928, Hilda was united in marriage with Albert Karsten. There were two children in their family, Gerald and Wilbur. Hilda worked in the Bud and Elsie McMahon home for close to 25 years. During this time, in 1958, her husband died. In 1971, Hilda moved into the Terrace Apartments. She volunteered at Congregate Meals and was always a busy person. She bowled for ten years preceding her 80th year. Hilda was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Manning.

Hilda fell and broke her arm in 1987 and in 1989 developed a leg problem that prompted her to move to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She enjoyed quite nor mal health for many years and became ill on July 19, 1999. After returning to the Plaza following her hospitalization, she died on August 17, at the age of 99 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Besides her husband, Albert, Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Wilbur "Casey" Karsten; brothers and sisters: Carla Petersen, Willie Schroeder, Albert Schroeder, George Schroeder, Alma Meyers, Harry Schroeder, Herbert Schroeder and Otto Schroeder.

Survivors include her son, Gerald Schroeder, and his wife, Joyce, of Manning; her daughter-in-law, Marlys Karsten of Manning; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister Lolida Wegner of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
