Hugo August "Shorty," son of William and Dora (Fischer) Dammann, was born June 29, 1917, in Audubon County, near Manning, Iowa. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then started working on the family farm.

Shorty enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps in the African Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After returning to Manning, he was united in marriage with Gertrude Farley on March 11, 1947 in Des Moines. They made their home and raised their children in Manning where he worked for Les and Ruby Dammann on the Manning Creamery Farm and later for the Manning Creamery Company. After the Manning Creamery Company closed, he began working for Well's Blue Bunny in 1972, retiring from there in 1985. In his spare time Shorty helped out at the Manning Senior Center by delivering senior meals and enjoyed going fishing. Throughout his life he delighted in playing the accordion and wash board. He also enjoyed people watching from his front porch and on Main Street. He was a member of the American Legion, Emil Ewoldt Post 22 and life-member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3517 where he was a charter member of the drill team.

After the death of his wife in 2002, Shorty remained at home until December of 2007 when he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. He died there on Friday, August 1, 2008, at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Preceding him in death are his parents; wife; daughter Sharon Rae Swanson; two brothers Walter Dammann and William Dammann; sister-in-law Pearl Dammann; and brother-in-law Paul Bogatzke.
