Ida, daughter of Ernest F. and Mary A. (Stanton) Mitterer, was born November 26, 1899, at Buffalo Center, Iowa. She was graduated from Buffalo Center High School and Waterloo Business College. On December 25, 1919, she was united in marriage with Manly D. Claassen at Buffalo Center, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Gerald E. and Marvin J. Her husband died as a young man in June of 1925.

On March 14, 1945, Ila (Mitterer) Claassen was united in marriage with Maurice M. Edwin at Hiawatha, Kansas. Over the years, Ila had made her home in the Buffalo Center community before she and Maurice moved to Manning in 1962. While in Manning they were employed as companions and cared for older couples in their homes. Later they made their home at the Terrace Apartments. As her health failed, Ila found it necessary to move into the Manning Plaza Nursing Home on May 16, 1982. Maurice died on March 7, 1983.

Ila had been in failing health for some time before her death on Sunday, May 4, 1986, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, Manning, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 8 days.

Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents; by her son, Marvin J. Claassen in May of 1953; by a grandson, Mark G. Claassen; by two brothers, Leslie H. Mitterer, and Leonard E. Mitterer; and by one sister, Iva F. Claassen.

Ila is survived by her son, Gerald E. Claassen, of Crookston, Minnesota; by five grandchildren; and by one great-grandson.
