She attended summer school at Buena Vista College and taught rural school in Ewoldt Township.

On November 29, 1938, Irma was united in marriage with Herbert Henry Bromert. To this union two sons were born: Ron in 1941 and Tom in 1946. They lived in Carroll and in 1947 moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, for a year before settling in Manning. While she was teaching and raising her family, she attended Drake University, receiving her degree in 1966. She furthered her education at Creighton University and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Irma taught third and fifth grade in the Manning Elementary School for 26 years.
