JAMES ELMER ALWILL

James Elmer Alwill, 88, a retired farmer, died Tuesday, June 4, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 1985, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with Pastor Paul Krumm officiating. Fern Jensen will be organist and the church quartet will sing. Burial, under the direction of the Ohde Funeral Home of Manning, will be in the Manning cemetery. Serving as casketbearers will be Allyn Erb, Howard French, Charles Wooster, Herbert Nelson, Richard Wooster and James Nelson.

Mr. Alwill is survived by his wife Laura; a son Wayne, Manilla, and a brother Arlo, Irwin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Mrs. Ed (Ethel) French, Mrs. Bert (Lydia) Erb and Vernie Alwill.

Mr. Alwill was born in Jefferson Township, Shelby County, on October 18, 1896, a son of Thomas B. and Carrie Vandeburg Alwill. He was confirmed in Zion Lutheran church in Manning. He attended school in Jefferson Township and then farmed with his father southwest of Manning. Several years later he began farming land next to his father's, continuing for the next 47 years.

On March 23, 1929, he was married to Laura Grau at Carroll by the Rev. Mueller. They retired in 1973 and moved to Manning. He had been a resident of the Carroll nursing home since October of 1984
