JAMES LEONARD, SR.
After two years of suffering and being confined to his bed nearly that long, James Leonard breathed his last on last Sunday morning. This man has certainly had more than his share of suffering, as he had been entirely helpless for the past two years and had to be turned in his bed for nearly that long. His good wife died about one year ago and at that time they supposed he would only live a short time, but he lived on until Sunday morning when he was summoned to his long home. He was a good kind father and loving husband and was a member of the Catholic Church for many years.

James Leonard, Sr., was born in Ireland in the year 1822 and moved when a young man to Canada, from there he moved to Carroll County and resided for a time on a farm north of Glidden and then moved on the farm, where he died, some 14 years ago about 3 miles southeast of Manning. He leaves two daughters and four sons to mourn his loss. The funeral occurred at the Catholic Church Tuesday morning, Rev. Father Tierney, officiating, after which the remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery by the side of his wife.

The bereaved have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.

Additional information: Another daughter, Margaret (born around 1855 in Canada) was married October 24, 1874 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Berlin, Illinois to Thomas Stapleton.
Their son, Thomas born March 20, 1876 was baptized March 21 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Taylorville, Illinois with Patrick Dwyer and Mary Ellen Leonard as his sponsors.
Both Margaret and her son Thomas died before the 1880 census.

Note: there are no tombstone records for James Leonard buried in the Catholic Cemetery but Ellen Leonard, who died January 31, 1902, aged 65 years is listed as wife of James Leonard.
