James Leonard
Obituary
The people of Manning and vicinity were very much surprised to hear of the sudden death
of James Leonard, a former resident of this community having lived for the past eighteen
years on a farm three miles southeast of Manning, until a year ago when his father died,
when he held a sale and moved with his two sisters, Kate and Celia, to Omaha, where be
has been working most of the time in a packing house. It seems some three weeks ago
while at work he got his head hurt, and at the time thought but little of it and the next day
went to work as usual, but before night felt so bad that he went home and seemed to get
gradually worse and was taken to the St. Joseph hospital but his attending physician did
not think him at all dangerous until the last days when he had a delirious spell and while
the attendant's back was turned he jumped out of the second story window, falling on a
cement walk which made it much worse, and after which be never regained
consciousness, and died last Thursday morning. He was brought to Manning last Friday
morning and interred in the Catholic Cemetery just northeast of town.
James Leonard was born in Canada 41 years ago and moved to Iowa 20 years ago. He remained at home and was a good dutiful son to his parents and sisters, and always lived a single life. He was a member of the Catholic Church and was well liked by all his friends and associates. He leaves two sisters Kate and Celia who live at Omaha, and three brothers, William and John, of Omaha, and Joseph, who resides near Ross in Audubon county, who were all present at the funeral, also Charlie and Mamie, son and daughter of John of Omaha were present. The remains were met at the C. M. & St. P. train by a large number of the M.W.A. Lodge, of which he was a member, and followed the remains to its last resting place.
