Joel Leonard Grundmeier

Joel L. Grundmeier, age 77, of Lakeside, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at his home in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Flag presentation by the Alta VFW Post 6172. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Joel Leonard, son of Marcellus and Evelyn (Frahm) Grundmeier was born on February 6, 1941. He was baptized on March 9, 1941, at the Arcadia Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa, by Rev. Theo Tews. He was confirmed on March 25, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa, by Pastor George Eschenbacher.

Joel graduated from Manning High School in 1959. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served four years with a one-year tour in Vietnam. During the tour in Vietnam he was assigned as an advisor with four Army Rangers as a Radio Speed Operator. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

He managed the Cyanamid plant in Manilla, Iowa, and in Lohrville, Iowa. In 1970 he became a NW Iowa salesman for Zep Manufacturing out of Atlanta, Georgia. He retired in 2006.

On August 24, 1968 he married Alice Tessman of Audubon, Iowa.

He was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church and then St. John Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. He loved teaching Sunday School and held many offices throughout the years.

He was an avid fisherman, golfer, hunter, and card player, yet his greatest joy was spending time with his family, his brothers and sisters and his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter Jennifer (Jason) Fuller, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his son John (Laura) of Elko New Market, Minnesota, and grandchildren; Brandon Grundmeier and Dylan Grundmeier.

He is also survived by his brothers, David (Bev) of Manning Iowa; Mark (Jerri) of Belmond Iowa; sisters: Joanie Reiter of Wall Lake, Iowa; Peg (Ron) Ellsworth of Harlan, Iowa; Susie (Ron) Schilling of Manning, Iowa; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharlette and Jack Weighton of Audubon, Iowa, and his mother-in-law, Helen Tessman of Manning, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Marcellus and Evelyn, brother-in laws, Ed Reiter and Willis Olson.

Burial will be at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia, Iowa.
