Johann Friedrich Jahn

Again the number of men with (many) years of lifetime shrank by one and to a good man the doors of the ever unknown land opened. Suddenly, while gardening, Johann Friedrich Jahn was overtaken by death last Saturday (May 7, 1904) in Westside. The cause was a heart attack.

The deceased was born on December 4, 1829, in Ostrohe, Holstein. Since 1856 he was married to his wife, Katharina (Catharina) maiden name Groth, who outlives him. From 1873 on, when he came to America, he has lived in Crawford County. Besides his wife, there are five children mourning for their father: Wilhelm (Paul William Jahn), Hermann, Mrs. Claus (Anna) Anthony, Mrs. H.C. (Margaretha) Martens, and Mrs. Georg (Emelia) Buck.

Johann Friedrich Jahn was one of those German men who, wherever they had settled, gave honor to their old/native home county/fatherland. Sincere, dutiful, and good by heart, were the main characteristics of him, and whoever got to know him honored and loved him.

The funeral took place last Tuesday at the Hayes Township Cemetery, with great anticipation. Pastor Freitag led the ceremony and dedicated a beautiful eulogy to the deceased.
