John Barten Rites Held Here Monday

John Barten, for many years a resident of this vicinity, a member of the present city council, passed away at the Wyatt Memorial hospital on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 31 where he had been taken two days previous, suffering from a heart disease. He had been ailing for more than a year and had been under the care of a doctor although he was able to be up and around until almost the end.

Mr. Barten was born near Bellevue in Jackson County, Iowa, December 1, 1871, son of Chris Barten and Anna Joss Barten. Later he moved to Lincoln Township in Audubon County where he farmed for many years. About twelve years ago he retired and moved to Manning, and has made his home here ever since.

In 1901 he was married to Miss Ada Meyers of Lincoln Township and to this union four sons were born. Those who survive are Richard and Walter of Gray and John at home. Mrs. Barten passed away in 1916.

In 1918 he was married to Miss Pauline Miller. To them one daughter, Lorraine, was born. Those who survive are his widow, three sons, one daughter, four grandchildren, three brothers, Chris and Charles Barten of Manning and Henry of Bellevue, Iowa. Two sisters, Mrs. Rose Dobrick and Mrs. Louise Dobrick of Chicago.

The deceased was prominent in civic affairs and was in his second term as city councilman. He was a town booster and always ready to give his time and aid when called on to do so. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church Monday afternoon, Jan. 4 at two o'clock with Rev. J.M. Ansorge in charge.

Internment was in the Manning cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were John Frahm, Jurgen Clasen, H.A. Boysen, Carl Hagedorn, O.V. Schelldorf, and Jacob Carstens.


John Barten is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
