John Leslie "Curly," son of George Thomas II and Martha Jane (Parker) Doyel, was born April 12, 1919, on the family farm near Dixon in St. Mary's County, Missouri. He moved with his family near Botna, Iowa when he was three years old. He attended rural school and then worked on the family farm for a number of years.

On November 27, 1940, Curly was united in marriage with Mildred Elaine Erb at Carroll, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union. In 1944 they started farming on their own in Audubon County, Iowa, continuing there for 34 years. In 1979 they retired and moved into Manning and in 1994 to simplify their life moved to Elm Crest Apartments. Mildred died on July 9, 1999. The next year Curly entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Curly was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served as chair of the trustees. He served on the board of the Farmers Home Administration in Audubon County for three years. Curly and Mildred enjoyed square dancing, traveling, playing cards and gambling. He also enjoyed fishing up north and even tried deep-sea fishing.

Curly died on his 85th birthday, Monday, April 12, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, following a period of declining health.

Preceding him in death are his wife, parents, and brother, Elmer Doyel.
