John F. Barten

Funeral services for John F. Barten were held Tuesday, December 27, 1988, at 10:30a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Karol Armentrout as vocalist and Fern Jensen as organist. Internment was in Manning City Cemetery with John's grandsons, Douglas Barten, Dennis Barten, Gary Barten, Mark Barten, Matthew Barten, Bryan Armentrout, and Derek Armentrout, serving as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were John's granddaughters: Kristi Barten, Tanya Armentrout, Amber Atkins, and Kelly Atkins.

John, son of John and Ada Meyer Barten, was born December 30, 1908, on a farm in Lincoln Township, Audubon county. He attended Lincoln Township rural schools. When John was 7 years old his mother died; his step-mother, Pauline Barten, raised him from boyhood.

On August 3, 1937, John was united in marriage with Elda Rothfolk. Four children were born to this union: Roger, Dorothy, Robert, and Linda.

John made his home on a farm near Botna, Iowa, moving to Manning in 1971. He then worked for MJM Enterprises.

He died unexpectantly late Thursday afternoon, December 22, 1988, at Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 22 days.

John was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and held membership at Zion Lutheran in Manning.

He was preceeded in death by his mother and father and step-mother; by two brothers, Walter and Richard Barten; by a half-sister, Lorraine Barten Danner; and by a sister-in-law, Ida Barten.

Survivors include his wife, Elda, of Manning, four children: Roger Barten and his wife, JoAnn, of Audubon; Dorothy and her husband, Richard Armentrout, of Cody, Wyoming; Robert Barten and wife, Diane, of Des Moines; and Linda and her husband, Steve Atkins, of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gertie Mork of Irwin; a brother-in-law, Frank Danner of Carroll; nieces, nephews, cousins; EldaÕs brother and sisters, Eileen Mundt of Manning, Lorraine Gruhn of Manning, Norman Rothfolk of Manning, Delores Fastje of Denison, and Mary Ann Suhay of Big Bear, California.

Much of John's spare time in later years was spent playing cards with his friends. The time spent with his friends meant so much to him.


John Barten is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
