Funeral services for John Henry Hammer, well known resident of Manning who passed away Thursday, June 1, 1944, at his home on North Main Street, was held here Monday, June 5, at the Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor John M. Ansorge officiating at the services. Burial took place at the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harry Nulle, Fred Nulle, William Meggers, Ed Meggers, Alfred Nulle, and Emil Steen.
Mr. Hammer was born March 25, 1866, at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He came with his parents to America in 1868, at the tender age of two years, coming direct to Iowa and settling in the neighborhood of Mineola; moving later to Neola, Iowa, and from there came to Carroll County.
Mr. Hammer was married to Miss Caroline Nulle on March 9, 1892, at Audubon, Iowa, to which union 10 children were born, of which three preceded their father in death. Those surviving besides the bereaved widow and mother are: William Hammer and Rosa (Mrs. Alfred) Gluesing of Denison, Iowa; Marie (Mrs. Frank) Zorn of Mariam, Kansas; Anita (Mrs. George) Freml of Vail, Iowa; Lou Hammer of Manning; Dorothea (Mrs. Richard) Wolfram and Edward Hammer of Davenport. He also leaves 24 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. Hammer had been an invalid for eight years and a year later, in 1937, they retired from active farming and came to Manning where they have resided since. He was a very patient sufferer and under the tender care of his wife and children he carried his lot cheerfully. A stroke of paralysis ended his suffering and he slumbered peacefully into eternity.
On March 9, 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Hammer had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in a circle of relatives and friends.

Windgrove of Arion, Iowa.
