John R. Hornberger MD
John Riale, son of Evans and Marjorie (Lichtenwallner) Hornberger was born May 4, 1924, at Omaha, Nebraska. He grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha Benson High School. John graduated from the University of Nebraska with B.S. and M.D. degrees. He served his internship at the State University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and his Family Practice residency at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. It was at this time in the 1940s that John had become a well-known vocalist in Omaha.

On September 9, 1948, John was united in marriage to Joan Holmquist at her parents' home in Omaha. Two sons were born to this union. In 1950, John and Joan made their home in Manning, Iowa, where he established his family practice, retiring in 1989.

John was a dedicated physician and was very active in the medical community. He held memberships and served on the board of directors and as past president of numerous medical organizations. John was most proud of receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians in 2003. Manning community members may remember John as a Scout leader in the 1960s, fisherman, golfer, gardener, pilot, Liederkrantz singer and as an accomplished Mason (Eastern Star, Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite and Shrine). As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, John will be missed as a respected Elder and choir member.

On Saturday, September 2, 2006, John died at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, Iowa, following a long battle with cancer. He was 82 years, 3 months and 29 days of age.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother Evans Z. Hornberger Jr., M.D.

He is survived by his wife Joan Hornberger of the Manilla Manor; sons John Hornberger Jr. and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Richard Hornberger and wife Mary of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren: Amanda, Austin and Nicholas Hornberger; other relatives and many friends. Dr. John's family requests that memorials be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Manning.
