DEATH OF JOHN KARSTENS.
John Karstens, one of the pioneer merchants of this city, and whose name is familiar to most everybody in the country around Manning, died on Wednesday afternoon at Wright's hospital in Carroll. For several months prior to his death, Mr. Karstens had been a continual sufferer with haematuria, caused by a cyst (growth). Two weeks ago today, acting with the suggestion of the family physician, Mr. Karstens went to the hospital, where, on the day following, an operation was performed. It was thought for a time that he would recover, but on Monday of this week his condition took a sudden turn for the worse. The wife and daughter were present when the end came on August 2, 1899.

The remains were brought to Manning yesterday morning on the 8:20 train and taken to the family residence on Center Street. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 from the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Krog, of Manilla, officiating. Then the remains were borne to the cemetery, yonder on the hill to the south, where, beneath misty, gloomy heavens, they were deposited in the grave.

John Karsten was born November 30, 1841, at Sheide, Germany. He came to America in 1866, locating in Scott county, Iowa, where he lived until 1868, when he removed to Crawford County, purchasing a farm about eight miles northwest of Manning. In 1872 he was married to Christine Dethlefs.

In the fall of 1883 Mr. Karstens left the farm, came to this city and entered into the mercantile business, continuously following up the same until removed by death. He has had three different partners, the first being Peter Dethlefs, his brother-in-law; the second, Henry Thielman; and the third Theodore Hansen, who is the present manager of the firm.

John Karstens was an honorable man and highly respected by all who knew him. He was a man who attended strictly to his own business, never meddling himself with the affairs of others.

To the wife and daughter the Monitor, in behalf of their many friends, extends sympathy in this their time of great affliction.

John Karstens is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
