OBITUARY OF JOSEPH ADEN BARNES
Joseph Aden Barnes died at his home at Terril, Iowa, November 16, 1914, aged 75 years, 7 months and 27 days. Mr. Barnes has been in poor health the past year, suffering from heart trouble and kidney disease. He was bedfast about two weeks before the end came. Surrounded by his loved ones who ministered to his comfort in every possible way, and trusting in God whom he had served so long, his gentle spirit took its flight that reaches to the end of time.

Mr. Barnes was born in the state of New York, March 19, 1839. He married Miss Mary E. Dillingham at Cherry Valley, Illinois, December 22, 1863. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 22, 1913. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes have resided in Iowa about forty-five years, as well as in Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota. They lived in Sac County for a good many years, at one time owning the farm now owned by Fred Hartung and for a number of years owning a farm near the Correction Pond northwest of Sac City. After leaving Sac County they moved to Granada, Minnesota, but did not stay there but a short time when they sold out and moved to a farm five miles northeast of Terril one and a half years ago. This he had sold recently with the intention of moving to Newell where he had recently purchased a five-acre tract of land, and was preparing to take life easy the balance of his days but, fate having decreed otherwise, the end came before he had an opportunity to move to his new possession.

Mr. Barnes joined the Christian Church over forty years ago and lived a consistent Christian life. He later became a member of the Baptist Church. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor, beloved by all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his loved ones and by many friends. The deceased had been in poor health for the past year and a half, suffering intensely at times, yet he bore it patiently, and all that his loving wife and members of the family could do was of no avail.

After a short funeral service at Terril, conducted by Rev. Thomas Griffith of the local M.E. Church on November 19, Mr. Barnes' body was taken to Newell where a funeral service was held in the Congregational Church on Friday, November 20. An old-time friend of Mr. Barnes, Rev. J. Irving Brown pastor of the Christian Church of Sac City, conducted the services. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery north of town.

Besides a large circle of friends and relatives, he leaves to mourn his death a loving wife and eleven of his thirteen children, five sons and six daughters: Nathaniel Barnes, Manning, Iowa; Lilly Proctor, Redfield, Iowa; Wood Barnes, Lytton, Iowa; Lewis Barnes, Fonda, Iowa; Joe Barnes, Sherburn, Minnesota; Maggie Kelso, Newell, Iowa; Jessie Woodling, Sherburn, Minnesota; Lois Johnson, Sherburn, Minnesota; Daisy Hine, Terril; and Gertrude at home. All of these were present at the funeral.

Joe Barnes, as he was familiarly called, had a host of friends in Sac County, including the editor of The Star, who will join with the family in mourning the death of an honorable man and good citizen in the community and a kind and indulgent husband and father.
