Joseph John, son of John and Mary (Sporrer) Knueven, was born on the family farm west of Templeton on October 22, 1920. He attended Templeton School and then helped his parents on the farm.

Joe married Marian Arp on October 3, 1940, at the Sacred Heart Church, Manning, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Robert, Karen, Jan, Gary, and Deb.

Joe worked at the Manning Creamery for 21 years until it closed, then at L.R. Nelson Corporation until its closing in 1982. He drove school bus for eight years, a job that brought great joy to his life, along with running a small engine repair shop out of his home. Most recently he was a parts runner for Independent Repair.

Joe was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Manning, as well as a fireman for many years, serving as secretary of the fireman's hall. He was also a lifetime member of the Schuetzen Verein. Joe and Marian had the joy of celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary in 1990.

In November of 1993 Joe was diagnosed with cancer and died at Manning General Hospital on Friday, January 28, 1994, at the age of 73 years, 3 months, and 6 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert, in infancy; a brother, Louis; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Walsh and Norman Arp.

Survivors include his wife, Marian, of Manning; his children; Karen and her husband, Jim Amsden, of Denison; Jan and her husband, Bill Lahndorf; Gary Knueven and his wife, Linda; and Deb Knueven, all of Manning; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Frank Knueven and his wife, Claudia, of Templeton; a sister, Anne Walsh, of Templeton; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lyle O. Arp and his wife, Dorothy and Jean and her husband, Joe Hugeback, all of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Joe enjoyed spending time with his family as well as the outdoors, especially when he and family members spent time fishing, a hobby he truly loved.
