Julius "Jul" Francis, son of Lawrence William and Clara (Zitzlesberger) Hoffman, was born May 1, 1923, in Pleasant Valley Township in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended a one-room country school Washington Township No. 8. Following his schooling Jul helped on the family farm.

On May 1, 1946, Jul was united in marriage with Pearl Ellen Coleman. One son Michael was born to this union. Jul and Ellen made their home in Manning where Jul worked at Green Bay Lumber and the Manning Creamery until 1969 when they moved to Wheaton, Illinois. Jul worked for the Stahelin organization in nearby Glen Ellyn until his retirement in 1988.

While living in Manning, Jul was a member of the Manning Fire Department for 18 years and served part of that time as assistant fire chief and on the committee for fire truck #3. He also enjoyed gardening.

During his retirement in Illinois he and Ellen enjoyed visiting with their neighbors and traveling back to Manning. Jul also continued his love of gardening.

Jul’s health began to deteriorate over the past several years. In March of 2011 he fell and eventually entered Wynscape Health and Rehabilitation in Wheaton, Illinois, where he died on Sunday, April 17, 2011, at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 16 days.

Jul was preceded in death by his parents; brother Earl Hoffman; sister Harriet Hoffman and brothers-in-law Leo Bluml and Ed Long.

He is survived by his wife Ellen Hoffman of Wheaton, Illinois; son Michael Hoffman of Exira; sisters Phyllis Bluml of Denison and Marian Long of Carroll; brother William Hoffman of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
