Karl D. Grau Dies
July 1929 Manning Monitor

Detlef Grau, well known in Manning and area residents of Washington township, Carroll county, for many years, passed away at his home in Lake View, Iowa, July 5th.

The following is contributed by his pastor, the Reverend C. Walter.

Karl Detlef Grau was born at Grossen Adbe Kries, Neumuenster, Holstein, Germany, September 2, 1858 and passed away at Lake View, Iowa, July 5th, 1929 sometime between 2 and 6 p.m. Mr. Grau was home alone and had gone to the garage for some reason. When Mrs. Grau came home from an afternoon visit with neighbors, she missed him at supper time and began a search for him. She found his lifeless body in the garage. Death was caused from a stroke of paralysis. His allotted span of life was therefore 70 years, 10 months and 3 days. In 1867, at the age of 9 years he came to America with his parents who located first in Davenport, Iowa, later in Clinton County, Iowa residing there for about 5 years. After that the deceased resided near Manning, Iowa for about 19 years. In 1890 he moved to Lake View, Iowa, where he resided until his death.

On November 5th, 1880, while in Carroll county, the deceased was united in holy wedlock to Martha Lena Miller, with whom he lived in happy wedlock for almost 49 years. This union was blessed with one daughter who survives his passing. The deceased was a man who was favorably known in this community, who was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellowmen, straight-forward in his conduct. He was a man whose friendship was to be desired and cherished because it was absolutely reliable. He was kind and considerate of other people and their considerations, even though he did not always experience the same consideration. He was a faithful attendant upon services all these years at this place. By his congenial disposition he has endeared himself to us and we shall miss him from our midst.

He leaves to mourn his sudden and unexpected departure his bereaved wife, Mrs. Karl Detlef Grau of Lake View, Iowa and one daughter, Anna, now Mrs. John Meister of Manning, Iowa; 5 grandchildren of whom the oldest is Karl Grau has made his home with his grandparents from birth. The deceased further leaves to mourn, one brother Henry Grau of Manning, Iowa; other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held Monday, July 8th, at the Lutheran church at Lake View and interment was made at the Lake View cemetery.

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken, blessed be the name of the Lord. So teach us to number our days Oh, Lord, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Amen".
