Last Rites for Mrs. Katherine Jahn

Katherine Jahn nee Lemster, was born at Remmels, Hohenwestedt, in the province of Holstein, Germany, August 5, 1860. She spent her childhood days in her native country, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, in which she remained faithful to the last. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manning since the founding of the congregation.

She came to America at the age of 16, settling in the vicinity of Westside, Iowa, where she assisted in house work mostly on the farm. In 1879 she was married to Paul William Jahn, to which union ten children were born, of whom three preceded the mother in death. The first born, a girl, passed away in infancy; Henry in the year of 1915, at the age of 28 years; and Willie in 1932, at the age of 49 years.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Jahn moved to their own farm 7 miles south of Vail where they lived until their lives terminated on this earth.

The husband and father passed away on July 13, 1930. The seven surviving children are Herman of Manilla, Louie of Manning, Hugo of Manilla; Lena, Mrs. Ed Kuhl; Minnie, Mrs. Gus Meggers; Adele, Mrs. Ed Mordhorst, all of Manilla; and Amanda, Mrs. George Peper of Flandreau, South Dakota. She also leaves 37 grandchildren and 13 great-grand children; one brother, Karl Lemster of Cherokee, Ia.; three sisters: Mrs. William Hagedorn of Denison; Mrs. John Joens of Manning and Mrs. Louie Schroeder of Aspinwall, and many other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jahn had been ailing for some time and was tendered the best of care by her children and physician. She passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, November 21, 1937, at 1:30 o'clock. She was a good mother, a kind neighbor and true friend.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 24, from the home, the Reverend John M. Ansorge Pastor of the Lutheran church

Manning, conducting the services. Burial was made at the Hayes Township cemetery in the family lot beside her husband.

As pallbearers acted: John Meggers, Herbert Kuhl, Hugo Jahn, Louie Jahn, Herman Peper, Marvin Kuhl, all grandsons.
