Kenneth Gene Dales, son of Kenneth E. and Minnie (Johnson) Dales, was born November 30, 1931, at Redline, Iowa. The family moved to Manning when Gene was a boy. He attended Manning schools and graduated from Manning High School in 1950.

On April 13, 1950, Gene was united in marriage with Dorothy Reiling. One son, Harvey, was born to this union. They farmed in the Botna and Manning areas for seven years. In 1957, he began long distance trucking which he continued to do for 20 years. It was during this time that he learned many of his repair skills. He then had a local business with his son for 15 years.

Gene had been in failing health since 1979 and was hospitalized several times over the years, however, he remained active until the time of his last hospitalization. His health worsened in the last six months and he was taken to Manning General Hospital on May 15 and died there Tuesday morning, May 16, 1995, at the age of 63 years, 5 months, and 16 days.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Gary Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Manning; his son, Harvey Dales and his wife, Kathy, of Manning; two grandsons, Gary and Michael Dales; his mother, Minnie Dales, of Manning; two sisters: Mary Jane Johnston of Cottonwood, Arizona, and Nancy and her husband, Kenny Baum, of Sardinia, Ohio: nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

An important part of Gene's life was the Iowa Blacksmith & Weldors Association where he served as a director, vice-president, and president. In addition, he was a director and, in 1994, became president of the National Blacksmith & Weldors Association. In earlier years he was a judge for the 4-H and FFA at county and state fairs and recently judged for fair gadget shows. Gene was a charter member and past president of the Manning Lions Club. He enjoyed helping with community affairs, such as the Bloodmobile and glaucoma testing. He served two years as mayor of Manning and currently was on the city council. He was also a member of the Industrial Development Board and was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning. He enjoyed fishing and making fishing rods.
