Walter Frederick William Lapel

Walter, son of Gustav and Bertha Bolander Lapel, was born February 25, 1913, in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home and then farmed with his father. On March 21, 1936, Walter was united in Marriage with Hertha Bandow. Five children were born to this union. Walter continued farming with his father. After farming with Albert Bandow for several years he then farmed for himself in Crawford and Shelby Counties. Walter and his family moved back to Manilla where he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 15 years. His wife, Hertha, died on June 21, 1963. Walter retired in 1971.

On June 4, 1974, Walter was united in marriage with Florence Steckelberg Hass at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They lived in Woodward for several years before returning to Manning in 1980. He thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the Manning Senior Center.

In 1992 Walter lost his eyesight and his health began to fail. His wife, Florence, cared for him at home. He entered the Manning General Hospital one day before his death there of lung cancer on Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 11 days.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Elizabeth Odefy; his first wife, Hertha; and 2 sons, who were stillborn; as well as, a brother, in infancy.

Walter is survived by his wife, Florence, of Manning; 3 children: Roger Lapel and his wife, Theresa, of Bloomington, MN; Larry Lapel and his wife, Donna, of Council Bluffs; and Beverly and her husband, Richard Curlee, of Omaha, NE; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 6 stepchildren: Keith Hass and his wife, Sandra, of Manning; Kenneth Hass and his wife, Jolene, of Loveland, CO; Kathryn and her husband, Phillip Cooper, of Glenwood; Kay and her husband, Robert Subbert, of Panora; Kevin Hass, of Glenwood; and Kurt Hass, of Manilla; 18 step-grandchildren; 24 step-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Selma Carter, of Irwin, and Leita and her husband, John Steckelberg, of Denison; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
