Larry F. Lutwitze, age 73, of Dedham passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dedham with Fr. Andrew Hoffman as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Music for the Mass will be by St. Joseph's Choir. Lector for the Mass will be Deacon Louis Meiners. Gift bearers will be Holly Rapp and Haley Lutwitze. Casket bearers will be Ron Lutwitze, Dan Thielen, Glenn Langel, Mitchell Langel, Eric Ebner, and Chad Rapp. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Dedham.

Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Friday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to St. Joseph Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Born on April 4, 1943, in Carroll, Iowa, he was the son of Lawrence and Irene (Thielen) Lutwitze. He began his schooling at Sacred Heart Grade School in Templeton and later attended a one-room schoolhouse south of Manning at Ewoldt No. 7 "White Bear" country school. Larry completed his primary education at St. Joseph's School in Dedham and he graduated from Kuemper High School in 1961. He then attended Creighton University where he received both bachelor's and master's degrees in education and English, respectively. His teaching career began at Omaha South High School, and included teaching assignments at Creighton University as a graduate teaching assistant, at Manning, Iowa (1969 to 1917), and at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, where he completed twenty-three years of service, specializing in English composition and talented and gifted education. While at Lewis Central, he also found time to teach 18 different college courses for both Iowa Western Community College and Buena Vista University. After completing his teaching career, Larry worked for a time as an information researcher at a media monitoring agency in Omaha, finally taking up residence in the Dedham community until 2001. While living in Dedham, Larry was active in community projects helping to write grants and organize several events including writing the city code. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his friends at local establishments. Larry was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dedham where he sang in the choir.

Larry is survived by his brother Ronald Lutwitze (Ruby) of Carroll and two nieces Holly Rapp (Chad) of Denver, Colorado, and Haley Lutwitze of Iowa City, Iowa.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lutwitze of Dedham, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Thielen of Templeton.
