Laura Louise Derner, daughter of Orval and Lillian (Macumber) Maloy, was born May 18, 1927, at home in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm four miles north of Manilla. She attended country school at Nishnabotna No. 1 through 8th grade, then Manilla High School, graduating with the class of 1945.

Soon after finishing her high school Laura attended Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines with her sister Norma and both earned their cosmetology license in 1946. Laura then worked for one year in Denison as a cosmetologist.

On September 21, 1947, Laura was united in marriage with Roland C. Derner at the Manilla Methodist Church. They were blessed with one daughter, Linda. They made their home three miles east of Manilla where they raised their daughter and farmed. Roland died in 2005 and Laura continued to live on the farm.

Laura was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Guild, of which she held several offices. She also taught Sunday School for seven years, belonged to a sewing circle and helped with Braille work. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, flowers, yard work, feeding birds and sewing.

In March 2010, Laura was diagnosed with cancer. On September 9th she was admitted to Manning Regional Healthcare Center. On September 17, 2010, Laura died there at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 30 days.

Laura is preceded in death by her parents; husband Roland Derner; sister Norma and husband Milford Wiese; and five brothers in law: Merlin Derner and wife Doris; Mack Carter and wife Iona; Lyle Eich; Gail and wife Arletta Christiansen; and Merlin Holdsworth.

Laura is survived by her daughter Linda and husband John Ostrand of DeSoto, Iowa; sister Opal Holdsworth of Denison; brother Elwyn Maloy and wife Carol of Sheridan, Wyoming; sister in law Colleen Eich of Sun City, Arizona; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
