Lena Carlson Rites Held Here

Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Carlson were held Friday afternoon in the Anderson Stingley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. G.W. Goodsell of the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Methodist Church officiating.

Mrs. Carlson passed away May 27 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Deadwood following a long illness. Burial was in Bear Butte Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota. Music was furnished by Mrs. Hanour Griffin and Carroll Hysom. Pallbearers were Archie Haley, Stanley Somers, George and Rehear Follette, Clarence and missing information & possible spelling error for Follette.

Lena Carlson was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kusel in Audubon County, Iowa, December 17, 1886. When she was young her parents moved to Bloomfield, Nebraska where her father engaged in farming and in the hardware business for a number of years. The family then moved to a homestead in the Newell area.

In June 1911, she was married to Victor Carlson. To this Union were born four sons and one daughter. The Carlsons farmed in the Vale, South Dakota, community for over 20 years. Carlson passed away December 5, 1947, and in 1953 Mrs. Carlson moved to Sturgis to make her home.

During her active years she was a member of the Extension club, the Congregational Church and as an ardent worker in her home and garden. After moving to Sturgis she attended the Wesleyan Church until she became shut-in in 1961.

She is survived by five children; Ralph and Clarence of Sturgis, Leonard of Spearfish, Alvin of Whitewood and Mrs. Esther Henslee of Fresno, California; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Edith Adams, Yankton and Mrs. Anna Martens of Rapid City and a number of nieces and nephews.
