Lena, daughter of Fred and Amanda (Asmus) Gruhn, was born August 26, 1897, near Manning, Iowa.

She attended the rural schools near her home.

On July 5, 1916, Lena was united in marriage with Albert Jansen at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Reverend John Ansorge. Thirteen children were born to this union. They made their home in Manning until 1918 when they moved to Dallas, South Dakota. In the early 1950s the family moved to Springfield, South Dakota, and finally back to Manning in the early 1970s.

For the past four years Lena and her husband had been residents of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary there in July of 1991. Lena died early Tuesday morning, November 12, 1991, at the age of 94 years, 2 months, and 17 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Harold and Clarence; a grandson, David; three daughters-in-law, Helen, Ann, and Vernell; two brothers, Henry and Ed Gruhn; a sister, Frieda Langbehn, and an infant sister.

Survivors include her husband, Albert, of Manning; her children: Bernice and her husband, Emil Ruhde, of Manning; Louis Jansen, of Manning; Leroy Jansen and his friend, Millie, of Carroll; Leonard Jansen and his wife, Donna, of Gregory, South Dakota; William Jansen and his wife, Margaret, of Gordon, Nebraska; Clifford Jansen and his wife, Orpha, of Pierre, South Dakota; John Jansen and his wife, Maxine, of Sioux City, Iowa; Deloris and her husband, Wallis Tonsfeldt, of Spirit Lake; Melvin Jansen and his wife, Jean, of McMinneville, Oregon; Duane Jansen and his wife, Arlis, of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and Joan and her husband, Charles Odens, of Forest City, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Nina Jansen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 33 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; five sisters: Ella Steen, of Manning; Alma Custer, of Harlan; Anna Mahnke, of Albert City; Ida Anthony, of Denison; and Helen Andersen, of Denison; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
