Leona, daughter of August and Bertha Mohr Karsten, was born May 2, 1914, in Ewoldt Township, Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized November 22, 1914, and confirmed April 13, 1930, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She attended country school in Ewoldt No. 8. After her schooling, she helped at home because her mother was not well.

On June 8, 1938, Leona married William Brus at the Lutheran parsonage in Washington Township in Carroll County. Leona and William lived with his parents for nine years until his parents moved into town and Leona and William bought the family farm. In 1972, they retired and moved into a new home in Manning. William died February 7, 1993.

On August 31, Leona entered Manning Regional Health Care Center, and on September 6, 1997, died there following a short illness. She reached the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 4 days.

Leona was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Ladies Guild. She helped with farming and enjoyed helping with Braille, playing cards, and fishing.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Harry Karsten.

She is survived by one nephew, Duane Karsten and his wife, Cynthia, of Manning; two nieces: Shirley and her husband, Glen Ahrendsen, and Virginia Johnson of Manning; several cousins, including Bernice and her husband, Harold Schroeder, of Manning; and many friends.
