Mrs. Albert Guth Dies As Result of Explosion Burns
Word has been received from Livingston, Montana that Mrs. Albert Guth, formerly of this vicinity was killed as the result of an explosion while trying to start a fire.

Following is a clipping from the Livingston Enterprise.

Seriously burned early Sunday, April 4 when a gallon can of distillate she was using to start a fire exploded, Mrs. Albert Guth, 21, until 17 days ago a resident of Denison, Iowa, died in a Livingston hospital at 9 a.m. Monday. The accident occurred at the ranch home of Henry Guth, a brother-in-law, about three miles north of Wilsall, Montana, at 6 a.m., as Mrs. Guth was attempting to start a fire in the kitchen range preparatory to cooking breakfast.

Several windows in the ranch home were shattered by the force of the explosion, and the husband, standing nearby, was seriously burned about the hands when he heroically attempted to extinguish his wife's flaming clothing.

The day's activities had just started when the explosion occurred. Henry Guth said the former Iowa young woman had kindled a fire, but it appeared to have died. She secured a closed can containing the distillate, a cheap tractor fuel, and as she was pouring it into the stove it was ignited by a remaining spark. Flames shot over the entire room. The husband temporarily blinded by the force of the explosion, groped about frantically attempting to locate his wife. Mrs. Guth made her way to a nearby door, her light housedress a mass of flames. The young husband, his sight recovered, grabbed her and forced her to roll in a snow drift to extinguish the blazing clothing.

In Livingston less than 45 minutes after the explosion, it was found that approximately 90 percent of the skin was burned from her body. She remained conscious up until a few hours before her death.

Mr. Guth suffered severe burns about his hands and required medical attention. The walls of the room where the explosion happened were charred and burned and the paint on the woodwork blistered.

Three employees on the ranch, Harold Schroeder, Jack Black, and Joy Beaumont, in a nearby barn when the blast occurred, aided in bringing the badly burned women to the hospital. Roads out of Wilsall were rough, deeply rutted and difficult to travel.

Mr. and Mrs. Guth came to Park County just 17 days ago from Denison, Iowa, to make their home. They had lived with Mr. Guth's brother, Henry Guth, while making arrangements to permanently settle in this section. They had been married but little more than three months, the ceremony having been performed at Denison, December 22. Mrs. Guth was a native of that city and had resided there all her life. She was born Leona Peterson, October 18, 1915.

Mrs. Guth is survived by her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Peterson of Denison, seven sisters, three brothers, and other relatives.

Services were held last Thursday at Livingston. Ray Guth of Aspinwall, a brother-in-law of the deceased, was the only one from this community to attend the services.
