LeRoy J. Brus, son of Hugo and Margaret Ehrichs Brus was born March 10, 1911, near Aspinwall, in Crawford County, Iowa. He grew up on a farm north of Gray and completed grade school in the neighborhood one-room school. LeRoy graduated from Gray High School with the class of 1930. During his senior year he drove a school bus and assisted at the Harry Rabel Grocery Store.

On June 4, 1936, LeRoy was united in marriage with Lucille Campbell at Harlan. One son, Ronald, and two daughters, Dorothea and Marilyn, were born to this union. LeRoy was a dedicated farmer, always trying to preserve the soil and produce quality products. He raised grains and forage for his livestock. His dairy herds produced Grade A milk and the farrow to finish swine operation produced quality pork. The poultry flocks produced hatching eggs for many years. From 1977 until retirement LeRoy was assisted on the farm by his son, Ronald. He retired from active farming in 1985, keeping a small flock of sheep until moving to Harlan in 1991.

LeRoy cooperated with the County Extension Service, Aspinwall Coop, and Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He was also involved with the Farm Bureau, International Farm Youth Exchange, and local 4-H clubs. The family hosted a young farmer from the Netherlands and one from Denmark during the summer of 1951.

Because of failing health LeRoy became a resident of the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan in August of 1992; he died there on Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 26 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ann Nielsen.
